WHO IS PEDRO DE LA CRUZ?

Pedro de la Cruz, a Santa Barbara-based artist, finds his forte in color and bold lines. His artistic journey defies categorization, allowing him the freedom to express the nostalgia of his past with a contemporary twist. Growing up in poverty in Tijuana, Pedro's early sketches were a refuge, expressing what words couldn't convey. His artistic epiphany struck in college upon encountering Picasso's limitless style, setting him on the path of becoming a professional artist. Now, his daily routine begins early in his art studio, a testament to his dedication.

ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY AND INSPIRATIONS

For Pedro, art isn't just about painting; it's about communicating positivity and kindness. He draws inspiration from the energy of his community – from coffee shops to beaches to ranches – aiming for his art to make people feel good, evoking happiness and serenity. "My art should radiate positivity and optimism. I yearn for people to believe in their own dreams and manifest them because I am proof that dreams do come true," Pedro remarks, emphasizing his art's role in motivating and uplifting his audience. 

Inspired by visionaries like Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Pedro embraces the unconventional. "Their freedom and use of color in their paintings gave me joy, hope, and confidence," he notes. 

However, Pedro doesn't limit his influences to the Traditional art scene, finding inspiration in the new era of art. 

“Today's artists drive and inspire each other; we thrive together in this co-independent era, drawing inspiration from our collective resilience,”  Pedro emphasizes. 

Amidst the pandemic, artists have had to rely heavily on the internet and especially social media to drive sales and global connections. “All conventional wisdom went out the window, and we were left to rely on our instincts,” Pedro remarks. Pedro has delved into marketing and branding via YouTube, drawing insights from figures like Gary Vaynerchuk.  “The internet and social media are our new avenues. We're in an era where artists prosper independently. We network, invest, and promote our own shows. Collaboration with fellow artists and business savvy minds is key.” 

Beyond classic artists, Pedro asserts that "the artists of today are my real inspiration."

ARTISTIC REFLECTIONS AND CURRENT WORKS

Pedro's recent works showcase the fusion of Mexican culture and Santa Barbara experiences. His series of rancher and vaquero paintings vividly depict California life, celebrating hard work, love, and family bonds. Additionally, his surf-themed paintings encapsulate the bohemian lifestyle, mirroring the pursuit of dreams that both artists and surfers share.

"Every brush stroke is a part of my heart" Pedro shares, encapsulating the peace and depth embedded in his creations.

SANTA BARBARA’S INFLUENCE AND FUTURE ASPIRATIONS

Santa Barbara, with its breathtaking landscape and supportive community, remains Pedro's retreat. Despite limited gallery spaces, it has motivated him to find comfort in the local stores and businesses. "My paintings are my emotional diary. However, simultaneously they are also a reflection of the people in my life and of my town." Pedro affectionately remarks, underlining the Santa Barbars’s pivotal role in shaping his artistic journey.

Pedro dreams of leaving a lasting artistic legacy, much like his inspirations, the Modernists of Paris and Basquiat. He aspires to create an art movement that will endure through time, a testament to his dedication and unwavering passion. Pedro de la Cruz's art embodies the vibrant spirit of Santa Barbara, resonating with positivity, hope, and boundless creativity.
